CanNorth College’s 41-week Early Childhood Assistant diploma program develops a strong knowledge of all stages of child development to prepare you for a rewarding career working with children of all ages. Our program emphasizes the communication, activity planning and observational skills you will need to play a key role in each child’s emotional, physical, social and psychological growth.
Throughout the program, you will learn to:
- Develop and implement programs and activities that stimulate a child’s cognitive, psychological, physical and social development
- Encourage basic skills, such as proper eating, dressing and toilet habits
- Observe children for signs of potential learning or behavioural problems and discuss solutions with parents, educators and supervisors
- Maintain a healthy and safe environment in which children can learn, play, create and explore

Key courses include Introduction to Early Learning and Care, Health and Safety, child development (prenatal, infant, toddler, preschool and school age), Program Planning and Nutrition A 480-hour field-related internship allows you to gain experience and confidence as you put your newfound skills into practice. Upon graduation, you will have the qualifications to pursue employment in childcare centres, kindergartens, nursery schools, community centres and more!
